Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad headed to the triathlon World Cup

Mallorca, (BNA): Led by His Majesty the King’s Representative for Charity and Youth affairs, Supreme Council for Youth and Sports Chairman and Bahrain Olympic Committee President HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Bahrain Endurance Team qualified for the first time ever for the Triathlon World Cup, which takes place in Austria next August.

Qualifying for the World Cup is considered to be the biggest achievement in the history of the Bahraini triathlon sport. This was announced during HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa and Bahrain Endurance Team’s participation in the Iron Man 70.3 Triathlon Championship, which took place yesterday in Mallorca, Spain.

Among 4000 international contenders, Bahrain Endurance 13 Elite Team member Daniela Ryf finished the three stages of the championship first, scoring 4:17:25 time. Daniela was able to complete the swimming challenge in 00:23:14 hours, cycling race in 2:29:31 hours and the 21.1 km run in 1:20:01 hours.

HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa finished the three stages of the championship in 04:42:43 time. He finished the 1.9 km swimming challenge in 00:28:16 hours and the ninety km cycling race in 02:37:10 hours, before he finished the running contest in 01:29:55 hours.

HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa commented after completing the final race that the three stages of the championship were difficult, considering the big numbers of athletes competing for the title and the challenging routes of the races. He also expressed his joy about the participation of three of the newly-formed Bahrain Endurance 13 Elite Team members in the race for the first time. The three members were David Plese, Eric Watson and Daniela Ryf, who showed great performances.

Confirming the difficulty of the race, HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa noted to the challenging cycling and running courses, which were narrow, making it a difficult task for contesters to complete a flawless round, in addition to the large numbers of athletes swimming at the same time, limiting the space of the course.

HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa praised the team members for demonstrating their best performance throughout the different stages of the championship.

Pointing to the importance of the Mallorca Iron Man 70.3 Triathlon Championship, HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa stressed that participating in the championship adds to the team’s international experiences, as it is one of the key endurance competitions in the world.

HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa underscored the team’s performance, which was pleasing considering the huge number of professional international triathletes taking part in the championship. He stated that they have represented Bahrain in a good way in international sports arenas, and reflected the capabilities of the sports-loving Bahraini youth.
