Bahrain and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons

The Hague,(BNA) The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Undersecretary and Chairman of the National Committee for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, Ambassador Abdulla Abdullatif Abdulla, headed the Kingdom of Bahrain delegation in the 19th session of the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.


The conference is being held from December 1 to 5, 2014, in the Hague and the sessions’ activities for this year are chaired by Ambassador Vesela Mr?en Kora? of the Republic of Croatia. During the general discussions, the Undersecretary presented an address, affirming the importance of the accession of all countries to conventions and treaties related to non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and abide by them.

He also highlighted key achievements by the National Committee for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons during the past period, including a workshop for the industrial sector and chemical companies to adhere to the requirements of the convention as well as raising awareness among university and school students on the convention.

On the sidelines for the session’s meetings, the committee chairman met with a number of delegation heads, where he discussed the means of implementing the Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and sharing common experiences as well as affirming the keenness of the Kingdom of Bahrain to continue to bolster bilateral relations for the benefit of the respective sides and achieve the aspired goals. The Kingdom of Bahrain ratified the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and on Their Destruction by Decree No. 6 of 1997, and issued Law No. 51 of 2009 on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.

In an opening statement during the session, the General Director of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), Ahmet Uzümcü, explained the role of the organisation in the Syrian Arab Republic.
The Kingdom of Bahrain delegation included committee Vice-Chairman, Brigadier Sameer Ahmed Al Zayani, committee members Dr Jassim Ibrahim Al Mehza and adviser Fatima Al Dha’en as well as representative from the Customs Affairs. (Foreign Ministry)
