(BNA)– Deputy Secretary General of the National Initiative for Agricultural Development and General Coordinator of Bahrain International Gardens Show (BIGS) Shaikha Maram bint Isa Al Khalifa stressed the importance of using “agricultural technology” to ensure sustainability of the agricultural sector. She said using this technology has become an inevitable must for this sector to grow and thrive.

She added choosing “Agricultural Technology” as the slogan of BIGS this year underlines the existence of technological solutions to the challenges facing the sector, including rarity of water, agricultural lands and electricity.

Speaking to Bahrain News Agency (BNA), she affirmed the need to use modern technologies, like vertical farming and hydroponic agriculture, to overcome problems and enhance productivity.

Shaikha Maram chaired today a press conference in Kempinski Hotel’s Royal Hall to announce the official opening of the 10th edition of BIGS on February 26 under the auspices of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and with the great support of Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, Wife of HM the King, Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Women and President of the National Agricultural Development Initiative Consultative Council.

The press conference was attended by the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO)’s office Head Dr. Hashim Hussain and Bahrain Gardens Club President Zahra Abdulmalak.

Shaikha Maram revealed that BIGS 2014 will be held on an area of 7500 sqm and will attract 130 exhibitors to showcase their products and technologies. She added the event is organised by the National Agricultural Initiative in cooperation with Tamkeen and UNIDO.

The show, which is expected to be the biggest so far, will feature a documentary on BIGS’ history and development over the past ten years.

Shaikha Maram lauded the National Bank of Bahrain for being the key sponsor of the event for the third consecutive year. BIGS 2014 will also be sponsored by Bahrain World Trade Centre and Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain.

The show will open to the public on February 27 and continue till March 1.
